Rare TV footage from Elton John’s early career! At just 24 years of age, he belts out one of his signature hits, ‘Tiny Dancer’ on a showed called The Old Grey Whistle Test that aired in 1971. The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, John’s writing partner. According to insiders, the “Blue jean baby, LA Lady, seamstress for the band” is none other than Maxine Feibelmann, Taupin’s girlfriend when he wrote the song and who became his first wife in 1971. The song earned a revival of sorts in 2000 when it was featured in Cameron Crowe’s movie Almost Famous, his autobiographical account of hitting the road as a young Rolling Stone writer.
The Old Grey Whistle Test was a British television music show that aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988.
