Back in 1979, before there was an MTV, Van Halen was getting some radio airplay for “Dance the Night Away” but wasn’t really making headway with any of their new material. So, on May 18 of that year, Warner Brothers filmed the band performing three songs, “Dance the Night Away,” “You’re No Good,” and “Bottoms Up!” which ultimately was shown on the popular Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert television during the November 24th broadcast.
It was a breakout performance for the band, and highlighted their great stage presence for the world to see. And the rest, as they say, was history! Here’s Van Halen in their first live performance on TV from 1979 with Eddie Van Halen on guitar, Alex Van Halen on drums, Michael Anthony on bass guitar and, of course, David Lee Roth on lead vocals. (We also have some lost footage from one of their first ever recorded concerts in January 1978 here!)
