WATCH: Literal Fan Video of “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas – 1977

How moved were you by music back in the day? Enough to make your own video of top song, like Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind”? If you were, you were likely the teen who made this 8MM movie, somewhere in rural America. And not just any movie, one that shows a literal translation of the lyrics “all we are is dust in the wind” by having actors simply vanish into smoke and dust! That’s right, starting about 1 minute in, every time the band sings about dust in the wind (or some other deep lyric) the actors–and sometimes their cars and bikes–just go “poof” and are replaced by smoke. The best part is, the son of the guy who originally filmed and edited it, managed to restore it and posted it to YouTube where it now has close to 10 million views since it was posted in 2006. (Be sure to stick around for the closing credits which list all the teens who worked on this movie more than 40 years ago!)
