What a great live performance! First off, the video itself says it was recorded in 1978, but my research claims that The Cars were on the BBC’s Rock Goes to College on January 13, 1979 at the University of Sussex, although the series did run in both ’78 & ’79. But close enough.
The Cars were formed in late 1976 and spent 1977 touring the east coast developing their sound and enough songs for their self-titled debut album which was released in June of ’78. A number of singles from that album went on to be hits for the band, but “Bye Bye Love” (also one of the bands oldest songs) was never released by itself, but was so popular among fans that it received regular airplay anyway. It was written by singer/songwriter/bandleader Ric Ocasek and sung by bassist Benjamin Orr.
So, here they are, The Cars, from 1978 or 1979 LIVE at the University of Sussex on the BBC’s Rock Goes to College, singing “Bye Bye Love.”
